Cloud computing behind the Tokyo Olympics
Due to the impact of the epidemic, this Olympic Games will be broadcast on the global cloud for the first time. There are almost no spectators on the scene, which is a true "Olympics on the Cloud". OBS Cloud, jointly created by Alibaba Cloud and Olympic Broadcasting Service Company (OBS), provides services for global Olympic broadcasting organisations. This is the first time in the history of the Olympic Games that cloud computing has been used to support global broadcasting.
In the past, live coverage of the Olympic Games required the construction of a huge international broadcasting centre and the deployment of temporary broadcasting infrastructure. This process is time-consuming and expensive, and it will be demolished after the Olympics. After applying OBS Cloud this year, the area of the Tokyo Olympics’ international broadcast centre has been reduced by 25% compared with previous Olympics, and the field staff has been reduced by 27%.
Global media can build their own content creation, management and distribution systems on the platform based on OBS Cloud. This allows the relay staff to complete the relay and editing work remotely without having to go to the Tokyo Olympic site in person. Statistics show that during the 17-day period of the Tokyo Olympics, Olympic Broadcasting Services produced more than 9,500 hours of sports event broadcast content, which is about 30% more than the 2016 Rio Olympics, and the total amount is the largest in all previous Olympics.
At the same time, this Olympics is also a milestone in the transition from High Definition (HD) to Ultra High Definition (UHD). OBS will be produced in full native UHD HDR, with 5.1.4 immersive audio, which can provide four times more details than the "standard high-definition format".
Behind the efficiency of cloud live broadcast with lower latency upload, faster editing and streaming transmission lies Alibaba's powerful cloud computing and data processing capabilities. It is understood that OBS Cloud will continue to serve the Beijing Winter Olympics next year.
The future of cloud production
The global Olympic Games on the cloud has brought a new concept of "production and broadcasting on the cloud". Its essence is the complete cloudification of the complete business process of the media’s "strategy, acquisition, editing, distribution, tracking, and evaluation". The core lies in the impact of cloud environment on business Support and realize and push the cloud into the end through Wuying Cloud Desktop.
Through cloud-based production and broadcasting, Alibaba Cloud has realized the full cloud-based media core business, completed the cloud-based replacement of traditional professional equipment, and resolved the space constraints and equipment dependence of practitioners in content collection, production, review, and release.
For the media industry, in the actual production process, because most of the historical data content is stored in the offline system, the import and upload of the original materials need to be frequently involved, and the use of the Internet is time-consuming and affects the actual experience. The current acquisition, editing, distribution, storage and other services are distributed on the cloud and under the cloud, which will be a relatively long transition stage. Therefore, the import and integration of the original content and the construction of the dedicated line link are very urgent and important problem.
