AMD Acquisition Xilinx, Creating the Industry’s High-Performance Computing Leader

After a few weeks of rumor, as well as a few years of hearing, AMD went first to the complete acquisition of FPGA maker Xilinx. The deal includes an all-stock exchange, exploiting AMD's sizeable share price to allow an equivalent $143 per Xilinx share – current AMD shareholders will still own 74 percent of the merged business. Deep Learning Enables Cell Analysis Without Labeling

Fluorescently labeled cell micrographs are undeniably stunning, but they require intrusive and often destructive or deadly protocols to get their glow. In order to prevent such disruptions, researchers have created a computer program that can differentiate between cell types and recognize subcellular structures, among other features — all without the fluorescent probes on which our human eyes depend.

Facebook Wants Its AR Glasses to Offer Superhearing to the Wearer.

A new Facebook experiment reveals how sound could play a key role in augmented reality. Chief scientist Michael Abrash and his team at FRL Research (formerly Facebook Reality Labs) published information today about what the group calls “ perceptual superpowers ” — AR devices that find out what you're trying to hear, then enhance it and dampen background noise. In conjunction with spatial audio features, the interface produces an aural equivalent of a hologram overlay in a pair of glasses.
